Low Back & Sciatica
Move Beyond Back Pain With a More Complete Approach
Low back pain and sciatica can affect nearly every part of your day, from sitting at work and getting out of bed to exercising, traveling, or simply walking comfortably. And when symptoms keep returning, focusing only on the painful area may not provide the complete picture. At Kfmt Physical Therapy, your clinician takes time to understand how your spine, pelvis, hips, nervous system, and overall movement patterns may be contributing to what you’re experiencing. Through one-on-one care combining hands-on Functional Manual Therapy® with movement re-education and exercise, we work toward improving mobility, function, and confidence in movement.

When Back Pain Starts Getting in the Way

Persistent Low Back Pain
When low back discomfort lingers or repeatedly returns, we look beyond the immediate symptoms to understand how your body is moving as a whole. Treatment may address mobility, strength, movement control, and compensations that could be influencing how your back handles everyday demands.
Sciatica & Radiating Symptoms
Pain, tingling, or other symptoms that travel from the lower back or buttock into the leg can make sitting, walking, and exercise difficult. Your physical therapist will evaluate your presentation carefully and develop an individualized plan based on the factors identified during your assessment.
Back Pain With Sitting or Desk Work
Long hours at a desk, commuting, and limited movement throughout the day can make an already sensitive back harder to manage. We can explore positioning, mobility, movement habits, and strategies that help your body tolerate the demands of your day more comfortably.
Pain With Bending, Lifting or Exercise
If picking something up, lifting at the gym, running, or returning to a favorite activity makes you hesitant, rehabilitation can focus on restoring both movement and capacity. The goal is not simply to avoid the movement, but to help you progressively return to it with better control and confidence.
Recurring Back Pain & Flare-Ups
When symptoms improve only to return again, it may be helpful to examine what happens beyond the site of pain. A whole-body assessment can consider how the hips, pelvis, spine, and surrounding movement patterns interact so your treatment plan can address the specific findings that matter to you.
What Our Patients Say

Is Physical Therapy the Right Next Step for Your Back?
If your back pain keeps returning
Temporary relief can be frustrating when the same symptoms continue to come back. A comprehensive physical therapy assessment gives your clinician time to examine how different areas of your body may be contributing to the demands placed on your low back and identify opportunities for treatment and movement retraining.
If you have pain or symptoms traveling into your leg
Radiating symptoms can feel particularly concerning because they may affect more than your back. Your physical therapist can assess your movement, symptoms, and functional limitations and determine whether physical therapy is appropriate or whether additional medical evaluation may be warranted.
If sitting has become uncomfortable
Whether you work at a desk or spend significant time commuting around NYC, difficulty sitting can interfere with your entire day. Treatment can address the mobility and movement factors identified during your evaluation while helping you develop practical strategies for work, travel, and daily life.
If you’re avoiding lifting, running, or exercise because of your back
Fear of another flare-up can make returning to activity difficult even after the worst symptoms settle. Physical therapy can help you progressively rebuild movement, strength, and tolerance based on the activities that matter to you.
Low Back & Sciatica Physical Therapy FAQs
Q:
Can physical therapy help with low back pain?
Physical therapy can be appropriate for many musculoskeletal presentations involving low back pain. Your treatment begins with an individualized evaluation to understand your symptoms, movement, mobility, and functional goals before your clinician recommends a plan.
Q:
Can physical therapy help with sciatica?
Physical therapy may be appropriate for some people experiencing sciatica or radiating symptoms. Because leg symptoms can have different causes, your clinician will first evaluate your individual presentation and determine an appropriate course of care.
Q:
What if I’ve already tried physical therapy for my back?
Previous PT doesn’t automatically mean another approach cannot be useful. If your symptoms persist, Kfmt can evaluate your current presentation using its Functional Manual Therapy® framework and determine whether there are relevant mobility, mechanical, neuromuscular, or movement-control factors to address.
